ARTIST IN RESIDENCE FOR CREATIVE INTELLIGENCE
Actor, filmmaker and visual artist Billy Zane has been named the inaugural Artist in Residence for Creative Intelligence within Caltech's Merkin Institute for Translational Research, establishing a new residency dedicated to exploring the role of creativity in scientific inquiry, discovery and translation.
The appointment recognizes a premise shared by artistic and scientific practice: meaningful discovery often begins with the ability to observe closely, remain curious, question assumptions and imagine what does not yet exist.
Through the residency, Zane will work alongside Caltech researchers, professors, fellows and lab members to explore creative intelligence as a complementary discipline within scientific innovation. Drawing upon practices familiar to both artists and scientists—including observation, experimentation, pattern recognition, intuition, improvisation and comfort with uncertainty—the program will examine how creative modes of inquiry can expand perspective, generate new questions and reveal connections that may not emerge through disciplinary expertise alone.
Rather than approaching creativity primarily as a means of communicating science after discovery has occurred, the residency will explore its potential within the process of discovery and translation itself: as a way of reframing problems, challenging assumptions, visualizing possibilities and creating productive exchanges between different forms of expertise.
The work is particularly suited to the mission of the Merkin Institute for Translational Research, where discoveries must ultimately travel beyond the conditions in which they were first conceived. Translation requires not only scientific rigor, but the ability to recognize connections, navigate uncertainty, collaborate across disciplines and imagine pathways between an insight and its eventual application.
For Zane, the residency represents an opportunity for genuine two-way exchange. Artistic practice is not introduced as an answer to scientific questions, nor science as simply subject matter for an artist. Instead, the program creates a space in which two traditions of inquiry can encounter one another—each bringing its own methods, instincts and ways of recognizing possibility.
I'm excited to work alongside the remarkable people who make Caltech such an extraordinary place—and to explore with them what becomes possible when artistic and scientific ways of seeing are brought to the same question.
The appointment builds upon Zane's ongoing relationship with Caltech's Office of Technology Transfer and Corporate Partnerships. He is the founder of the Convergence Lab, a multidisciplinary advisory initiative developed in association with the office that connects students, researchers and scientists with experienced voices from design, media, industry and other fields to provide practical perspective and informed counsel as their work moves beyond the laboratory.
Zane also co-hosts The Einstein Suite with Fred Farina, a forthcoming series of conversations with Caltech professors and other leading thinkers at the frontiers of discovery and innovation. Through the complementary perspectives of science and the creative arts, the series explores not only what its guests are discovering, but the curiosity, imagination and human processes behind discovery itself.

Billy Zane is an actor, producer, filmmaker, artist and entrepreneur whose work spans entertainment, fine art, science and emerging technology.
